The scenes of devastation, agony and despair in Nepal are fast disappearing from the pages of newspapers and television screens. But make no mistake – the needs of Nepal remain pressing today, more than a month after the country was ravaged by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake.

Thank God that millions of dollars in aid and countless hours of relief work by volunteers have poured into the country since then. But getting enough funds to deliver aid to the victims is still a huge challenge.

AsiaCMS is glad to be doing its bit for Nepal, by partnering with four local Christian organisations to help thousands of families badly affected by the April 25 earthquake and series of aftershocks.

AsiaCMS executive director Tan Kang San said AsiaCMS, including its India office, had raised more than RM40,000 for the earthquake victims.

“We would like to thank all churches and individuals who have generously donated to this cause. I believe we can do more,” said Kang San.

AsiaCMS is co-hosting the Seventh Lausanne International Researchers Conference in Kuala Lumpur this week. The organisers have invited AsiaCMS co-mission partner Ram Prasad Shrestha to give an update and have agreed to do a special collection for the relief work in Nepal.

Ram Prasadsaid his organisation NMCN had bought a second phase of relief supplies worth US$8,000.

“By God’s grace and through your generous support we have been able to distribute food for 500 families and warm clothings in Dhading and Dolkha,” he said in an email dated May 19.

In its latest aid delivery, Asia CMS India will be sending 250 high quality UV-protected tents to Kathmandu this week.

AsiaCMS’s partner agencies in the relief work are the National Churches Fellowship of Nepal (LTD), National Mission Commission of Nepal (NMCN), Grace Community Services (GCS) and Asal Chimeki Nepal (ACN).

ACN executive director Rajendra Kumar Adhikari thanked partners and supporters for making it possible for the Pokhara-based agency to extend aid to about 22,000 people from 5,400 households.

“We continue to deliver food and some non-food items to the people who are still in desperate need,” he said in an email on May 19.

AsiaCMS co-mission partners Melody, who is a trained nurse, and Saia are placed with ACN to do relief work.

AsiaCMS co-mission partner Bhibin Shakya himself had experienced several tremors while delivering aid to remote villages in Dhading and Chepang on behalf of GCS.

Bhibin was shocked by the destruction in Dhading, which he reached after an eight-hour journey.

“There were no food, no relief materials. I could only provide food for 40 families in one village,” he said.
